The fashion of building small houses started in the US and has slowly begun to spread over into other continents. Economic, ecological, functional – these are the most commonly used adjectives to describe the idea of a small house. Why has this idea gained such popularity?
Americans like big houses, and yet it is here where the Tiny House Movement (THM)was born. The movement occurred after the financial crisis and promotes small, but easy to arrange spaces: from 10 to 30 sq m. The great advantage is the ability to build them using savings, without the need for borrowing.
Tumblewood Tiny House Company is a company founded by Jay Shafer proposing the reduction of living space to a minimum. Why? Primarily for economic reasons. A home with less yardage primarily saves on operation costs and is an environmentally friendly solution. Also, buying a plot of land for a small house is much cheaper, and the cost of repairs is very low too.
Many architects believe that small houses can be a solution to the economic crisis. Jay Shafer builds homes ranging in size from 5 m. square., but these mini-homes are illegal in the US. Therefore, they all have additionally mounted wheels to gain the status of the trailer. As a result, the house also becomes mobile. The smallest of Jay’s houses is 6 m2!
Can a small house be functional?
Yes, of course. It requires lots of planning during the design, but modern furniture and technology allow for interior design that’s convenient to use. In a small house every centimeter square is used, so you won’t heat the empty spaces, lobbies and corridors, many of which nobody uses. Small houses can intelligently use energy, and above all, do not waste it.
In small houses typical environmental solutions can be used: green roofs, rainwater collection, and solar panels. Construction of a fully equipped and functional home for small spaces allow for better management of space and stimulates people to think green.
The whole idea of small houses is that we own cheap accommodation. However, this may not be the only point speaking to other supporters of this idea.
At the end we would like to list advantages of having a small home.
